3) Remote Experiences: Examples: Dealer Services: Virtual Showrooms, Financial Services
Car-Metaverse enables in-vehicle, remote, and virtual development capabilities for immersive reality experiences. Automakers are embracing expiration with XR (augmented reality with VR or AR) and Metaverse applications.
From June 2022, select Audi models with integrated holoride VR glasses will have access to games, movies and other interactive content.
In January 2023, BMW will debut the ‘i Vision Dee’, a metaverse car that represents the brand’s vision for future digital mobility.
On January 23rd, Skoda announced a virtual way for viewers to explore Škoda in the Škodaverse.
January 23rd. Mercedes-Benz has filed a trademark application for its vehicle line-up to future-proof its expansion into the Metaverse.
Mercedes-Benz is also using the Nvidia Omniverse platform to design and plan its manufacturing and assembly facilities.
At the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan unveiled the VR Passenger, allowing drivers to accompany self-driving cars during long journeys.
Volkswagen and Microsoft Collaborate to Use HoloLens 2 Mixed Reality Headsets in Moving Vehicles to Enhance User Experience
“A virtual trip to the Škodaverse allows our fans and visitors to learn more about our brand and build stronger bonds. We take a proactive approach to new technologies to maximize demographic appeal Martin Jahn, Škoda Auto Sales and Marketing Director
Apart from car manufacturers, start-ups are launching car services.
Holoride, a German spin-off from Audi, offers aftermarket and retrofit VR that offers immersive in-car gaming synchronized with the vehicle’s movements.
WayRay, a company specializing in holography and AR, unveiled a “concept car designed around True AR™ technology and a new ride-hailing business model.”
Taiwanese startup Mindtronic AI has unveiled biometric sensing technology with a meta-services ecosystem for the future of mobility.
“We took relevant data points such as position, velocity, steering, acceleration, and braking, and matched these to the artificial environment. We have created something fundamentally new to entertain rear seat passengers in an invisible way.”
Investments in XR are gaining momentum
Investment bank Goldman Sachs predicts the Metaverse will be an $8 trillion opportunity across the automotive, gaming, education, retail, jobs, media and other industries. The market size of XR alone is a core technology enabler and is expected to grow from $16 billion in 2021 to $45 billion in 2026.
Venture capital investment in VR/AR startups reached $3.9 billion in 2021, according to a McKinsey report.
Metaverse technology still faces technical challenges
The cost and integration of XR, advances in spatial computing and holography, and latency-free ubiquitous connectivity are some of the major technological challenges facing the Metaverse.
Spatial computing interprets physical space and introduces virtual 3D objects, allowing users to interact with environments with virtual elements. XR merges reality (AR – Augmented Reality) or replaces it (VR – Virtual Reality). Today, XR headsets for consumer electronics suffer from battery life, weight, and ergonomic limitations. Finally, as 5G adoption progresses, latency will decrease and accuracy will improve.
