Creating a Text Adventure Game with ChatGPT | by Jon Radoff | Building the Metaverse

ChatGPT is more than just a chatbot. Entire virtual worlds can be imagined using the power of its Large Language Model (LLM). I discovered that I could use it to recreate the experience of early text adventure games and multi-user dungeons.

One of the classic genres of computer games is the text adventure.game like the original Adventure in a giant cave and Zork It paved the way for a wide range of role-playing games created by an entire industry, not just highly social experiences that started with multi-user dungeons (MUDs).

The prompt is: You can experiment yourself.

I want you to act as if you are a classic text adventure game and we are playing. I don’t want you to get out of your character. Use braces like }, but otherwise you’ll have to stick to your text adventure program. The stage of this game is a fantasy adventure world. Each room should have a description of at least three sentences. Start by showing the first room at the start of the game and wait for my first command to appear.

GPT assumes a complete gaming environment using standard commands. It tracked my inventory, map locations, and was able to invent a plausible room description:

Unlike free-form environments such as AI dungeon Enforced rules and restrictions, such as simply breaking the chests you find to prevent them from being opened.

Retains context when navigating dungeons, including the ability to comprehend collected items.

But why stop with single-player adventure games? Can you dream of a multiplayer experience, with simulated players. It works (recommended to try and tweak a lot):

I would like you to act as if you were playing a classic text adventure game called Multi-User Dungeon (MUD). I don’t want you to get out of your character.I want you to pretend that there are other players out there that I can interact with as part of the MUD simulation. } to use curly braces, but otherwise you’ll have to stick to your text adventure program. The stage of this game is a fantasy adventure world. Each room should have a description of at least three sentences. Another player (who should be named and pretends to be a real human player enjoying the MUD) should be in the first room location. If they speak, put it in the code section. Start by showing the first room at the start of the game. Never explain yourself. Please do not enter commands on my behalf. Don’t control my actions

I was able to simulate MUD with other players. Among them were players who took their views on the moral value of power levels and warned of behavior that could get my account banned. Here’s the “Joe” we met in his MUD that ChatGPT came up with.

I’ve described the Metaverse in many ways, but a central theme is the intersection of creativity, identity, and real-time virtual worlds. Working with artificial intelligence may actually open up a new canvas that Blake once imagined.

see the world in a grain of sand
    And heaven among wildflowers
holding infinity in the palm of your hand
    and forever in an hour
