At ITWeb’s 18th Annual Security Summit in Johannesburg this week, experts uncovered the latest developments in cybersecurity threats and how to combat them, while talent shortages and emerging technologies came under scrutiny.

Using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to more effectively detect and respond to cyber threats will be a key theme at the annual gathering of cybersecurity professionals, decision makers and solution providers included.

On the first day, speakers and panelists reflected on the future of the industry, with discussions focused on the challenges of hiring and retaining cybersecurity-savvy talent.

Professor Elmarie Biermann, Director and Founder of the Institute for Cybersecurity, chaired a panel discussion on Building Future Cybersecurity Leaders and Teams.that We looked at the measures we should implement to ensure a culture of continuous learning and staying abreast of the latest cybersecurity threats and trends.

We need to go back and understand that security is not a technology issue.

Panelists included Lineo Racoco, Group CISO, Coca Cola Beverages Africa, Venisha Nayagar, Group CISO, Life Healthcare, Suren Naidoo, Group CISO, TFG, and Rashika Ramlal, Public Sector Country Leader, AWS South Africa. was.

Leaders in the cybersecurity field are battling a highly dynamic environment, Biermann said, requiring a concerted effort to rethink strategies to cushion the field from new shocks.

she said: “I think I saw a lot of speakers this morning focusing on artificial intelligence and everything that cybercriminals are trying to tackle. And, fundamentally, you need to understand that security is not a technology issue.

“Technology exists to help us, but please understand that the battle is not between organizations and cybercriminals.it is against the organization A growing cybercrime ecosystem. That’s where our problem lies. ”

Talking about the changing role of cybersecurity leaders, Nayagaar argued that:It is critical for cybersecurity leaders to have the skills to keep up with the rapidly changing technology landscape and emerging threats.

Traditionally, she said, cybersecurity leaders have had strong technical backgrounds and often come from IT-related fields. “Usually you’re a network or infrastructure administrator, perhaps with an IT department certification, something like moving into a cybersecurity or CISO role, and that used to be enough.”

However, Niger said the role of cybersecurity leaders has expanded significantly and is now more business-oriented and aligned with business objectives. As a result, the skill sets and competencies required of today’s leaders in this space are focused on business rather than pure IT.
