    Nokia’s 2030 Strategy Targets Metaverse’s Wider Potential

    Nokia's 2030 strategy is geared toward leveraging the vast opportunities presented by the metaverse, with a particular focus on advances in Web3 and AI. Anticipating a significant surge in network demand, the company aims to address this need through strategic investments in network infrastructure by the end of 2020.

    The company's vision, outlined in Nokia's Technology Strategy 2030 report, revolves around building a future-proof network architecture that responds to the evolving innovation landscape. This includes predictions that network demand will increase significantly by 22% to 25% from 2022 to 2030, largely due to the mainstream adoption of generative AI and virtual reality technologies.

    To realize its goals, Nokia plans to invest significantly in its network equipment and services portfolio, with a particular focus on six key ecosystems: Among them, the Internet of Value stands out, with its focus on decentralization, blockchain, and smart contracts. Within the Metaverse domain, Nokia's strategic focus is on human augmentation, spatial computing, and partitioned processing technologies.

    In pursuit of these goals, Nokia established two labs dedicated to metaverse research and experimentation in 2022 and embarked on significant efforts to explore industrial and broader applications in 2023 . Nokia envisions future network architectures that leverage network digital twin technology to simulate physical objects and facilitate prototyping and testing across industries.

    On the practical side, Nokia has already demonstrated the potential of Metaverse in places such as South Australia, using augmented reality via 5G-connected Microsoft HoloLens to deploy Cessna aircraft technology at remote airports.
