    The ABCs of digital technologies for designers

    Like it or not, technology is redefining the home decor and design industry and is quickly taking over.

    The good news is that no innovation can replace the uniqueness, brilliance, and creative imagination of the human mind. But designers, beware! Those who challenge technology are poised to win, while those who eschew it risk becoming as outdated as a trend board of magazine clippings.

    Even if you are a nervous beginner, there is no need to worry. Here's a starter kit that breaks down terminology (Merriam-Webster definitions), explains concepts, and weighs expert advice on three key innovations leading the way in home decor and design. We have: AI, AR and VR.

    AI: Artificial intelligence. Machine or software intelligence that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. Examples include visual recognition, speech recognition, decision making, and translation between languages.

    AR: Augmented Reality. An enhanced version of reality created using technology that overlays digital information onto the image of what you see through a device (such as a smartphone camera). Everyday examples include Snapchat and Pokémon Go.

    VR: Virtual reality. An artificial environment that is experienced through sensory stimuli (such as sights and sounds) provided by a computer, where the user's actions partially determine what happens within the environment. Often used in games.
