VR environments could help DHS promote disaster preparedness: Rand Corp. study

    Published on:

Digital virtual reality environments such as the Metaverse could aid Homeland Security communications Information on disaster preparedness, according to new research from Rand Corporation.

Researchers say such technology could help the public predict the likely impact of natural disasters, reducing injuries and costs.

“Preparation is likely to be a particularly rich area for DHS efforts in the metaverse,” the study said. “For example, current literature on earthquake and tsunami preparedness primarily uses text and still images to convey the dangers of these phenomena, and encourage people to buy non-perishable food and fresh water, as well as carry-on bags and other necessities. We encourage you to maintain an adequate supply of

He adds, “Metaverse-based preparedness simulations may enable people to experience simulated earthquakes, see the damage they could cause, and examine the contents of their carry-on bags.” rice field.

In his research, Rand describes the metaverse as virtual, networked to facilitate interaction between users, persistent, accessible, dynamic, and informed by real-world data. We define it as provided and defined by the people involved in its development. We also found that the technology could be useful for certain types of qualitative research by government agencies.

But Rand’s researchers also pointed out that alongside the benefits of virtual reality environments, the technology has many challenges that DHS must overcome. These include the use of technology to spread misinformation and abuse and harassment.

Additionally, the use of such environments can also raise cybersecurity threats and concerns about equity and inclusion, the nonprofit said.

“For technology to have impact, it must be aligned with purpose and goals, and indeed the Metaverse aligns in many ways with the DHS mission set (and certain specific needs). We argue that the Metaverse is related to the DHS.

“However, like any organization facing emerging technologies, DHS can also benefit from being proactive rather than reactive. In the meantime, we may consider further analysis to take advantage of opportunities and mitigate threats.”
